Thermal printers are highly reliable utilizing minimal moving parts.  A thermal printer produces a printed image by selectively heating coated thermochromic paper, or thermal paper, when the paper passes over the thermal print head.

With the Ethernet interface card the printer would be connected to the local area network (LAN).  The Ethernet cable connected to the Ethernet interface card in the back of the printer will be able to directly receive an IP address to route the printer packets from the iPad point of sale to the printer.

Configuring Star TSP 650 Ethernet (LAN) Printers to Static IP Addresses.

• Determine the printer’s current IP address with Self Print test.

• Turn the printer off.
• Press and hold down the feed button.
• While holding the feed button, turn the printer on.
• Continue holding the feed button until the printer begins printing.
  
• Release the feed button as soon the printer begins printing.

The printer will print two (2) reports. The Network Card will be the second of these printouts and will display the IP Address at the bottom of the report under the Current IP Parameters Status.

• Access the Star Network Utility to adjust printer configuration.

• From a computer that is on the same network, open a web browser (Google Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc).
• Enter the IP address from the printout in the address bar.
• Press Return / Enter

• See Login (left side under System Access heading).
• The default username for the printer is: root
• The default password for the printer: public

• Once logged in see IP Parameters (left side under Network Configuration)
• Click on the radio button next to Static //following addresses are used to change to static IP.
• Keep the first three sets of numbers of the IP address and only change the last three. Change it to something outside DHCP range. By default the DHCP range on an AirPort Extreme is 2 to 200. When setting up multiple printers it’s best select numbers that are not next to each other. i.e.: use 201, 203, 205, and 207.
• Enter the Subnet Mask and the Default Gateway. These numbers can be found on the bottom of ticket under the IP address.
• Click Submit.

• On the side bar, click Save.

• Click Execute and close the window. You will see the following message when the change has been successfully updated.
